What to expect

Here is what to expect (and what you need to do) before and after the refinishing job

Ideal conditions

The best conditions for refinishing are a warm, dry and clean room. So your bathroom is actually an ideal place to refinish! Any work such as tiling, repairing the floor or plumbing should be done before the bathtub is refinished. If tiling please remember to NOT put any caulking around the bathtub (I would have to dig it all out). If there are any cabinets or toilets that are less than one foot away from the bathtub, and can be moved easily, it would be really helpful to have them out of the way.

Before we arrive

Please leave a parking space for my truck. It is a full size pickup. The closer to the job the better.

Please clear out the room. The more space we have the better. The shower curtain, curtain rod, rugs, towels, pictures on the wall, plants and the soap and shampoo and stuff in and around the tub all taken out. You get the idea.

Putting the dog and cats away is a good idea. We have equipment and material to bring in and a machine that moves air with a long hose, so we may need to leave the door propped open a bit.

When we arrive

First we will bring in tarps and make a nice working and equipment area. Then we bring in equipment and material; nothing large mind you, one man can handle the equipment easily.

Then we go through the preparation process, the refinishing process and then we take out the equipment and roll out the tarps. Voila! No mess! The job should take from 2 - 4 hours, usually about 3 hours.

After we finish

At this point you have a brand new bathtub inside what looks like a spray booth. This needs to stay in place for at least 24 hours (standard cure), and 4 hours with our XL Same Day Cure.

There is some smell involved during the process and as the job cures for one day. The smell won’t hurt you. It's really just a smell for you. An example: if you smell dog poop does it hurt you? Of course not. It’s just a smell. You didn’t ingest it. Same with this. It’s just a smell, you aren’t ingesting anything.

After cure time

Peel the masking off slowly according to the directions. Peel it out and away from the bathtub. Roll it up and throw it away. You now have a brand new bathtub with nothing on it. It will need to have the drain shoe and overflow cover reinstalled or replaced and it will need to be caulked. Let the caulking cure for a day (or less) and you are back in business!

Other considerations

The secret to caulking is two things: get the corner perfectly clean and dry (that’s the hard part, and we do this for you), then with the caulking nozzle cut at an angle PUSH the nozzle from the middle of the wall to the corner. The nozzle cuts the caulking off. Then just touch the excess with your finger, wipe your finger on a paper towel, excess, towel, you get it. It should take a total of 2 minutes. Practice on something.... you’ll see.

A note about the drain shoe and overflow cover: Usually these parts come out easily. The older they are, the more difficult and corroded they are. If the drain shoe is disintegrating or is fused together it is necessary to cut the drain part out. So no matter what its condition, we can get the drain part out. If the waste and overflow pipe UNDER the bathtub is corroded away this would need to be replaced too. Sometimes 80 year old plumbing is in great shape, other times 20 year old parts fall to pieces. Each situation is different.

The nonslip surface we apply to the bathtub bottom is a material that looks like salt. It consists of microscopic polymer spheres. This is applied (salt shaker style) to the bathtub floor and the refinish material is applied over the top of this. This renders the floor with a very slight texture; it isn't rough and does not affect the longevity of the refinish or the appearance of the new finish (you can see the non skid slightly). The bathtub is still easy to clean. With the nonslip built into the surface you will never need a bathmat and its free!

Buyer Beware!

Refinishing companies are not all the same! Some companies use epoxy or car paint. They will give you a one or five year warranty that is often pro-rated so they can charge you when it fails.

Workmanship
